As a musician, he is a very good pianist who can compose good music quickly, a good skill to have to be a famous musician. As a teacher, in the beginning of the movie he really didnt want to pursue a career as a teacher, but in the end that is the only thing he wanted to do. He is somewhat successful at the beginning of the movie by being happy for his wife when he finds out she is pregnant and helping prepare for the arrival of Cole. However after Cole is born things seem to go downhill from here, he yells at her a lot and is generally pretty crabby about things.
