Single mothers and children Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Single buzz offs and children - Essay ExampleThe dispossessed women and their families are exposed to deplorable living standards that sometimes may be described as inhumane and unworthy of human habitation. Polakow, in her book, succinctly captures this view when she says that, This necessitates the decoding of our own myths of democracy and enlightened progress as one out of four infants, one out of five children, and one out of four genius mothers already live in destitution, and as thousands more stand on the edge of a landscape that condemns, like young Oliver Twists, to their proper stations (Polakow, 1994, pp. 3-4). The question that then presents itself is why single mothers and children? The population of homeless women continues to rise every year, particularly the number of single homeless women. Many scholars have been quick to point out that the rising numbers of homeless single women represents the feminization of poverty across the globe (Rosenheck, Bassuk, and Sal omon, 2010, p. 1). Many of the exceptionally destitute women have limited, job skills, earning power and education, and are beleaguered by childcare duties. In families where the adult female is the head of the family, it is quite common to find that they are poorer than two-parent families because of the existence of a single income and the cost of bringing up a child. These facts only serve to grow that poor women do not have a chance in the contemporary labor market, which is primarily planned to support two-parent families with male breadwinners (Rosenheck, Bassuk, & Salomon, 2010, p.1). This leaves the single mother with no option but to seek additional income, failure of which results in the inability to bear. This ultimately has the effect of forcing such women to seek accommodations in shelters resulting to an increase in the number of homeless people. The increasing numbers of homeless children may be directed attributed to child abandonment either by parents who cannot b e able to provide for their needs, or by death

His idea was that if people had light to work by they could and would work longer hours. In his mind, sopor was something that was not needed and stood opposed to progress (Coren, 1996). Anything which tends to slow work down is a waste. We are always hearing people talk about loss of nap as a calamity. They better call it loss of time, vitality, and opportunity. -Thomas Edison Even great minds, like Edisons, back be wrong at clock. Some researchers argue that had Edison spent more time sleeping it would not be possessed of taken him more than 1000 attempts to create his light bulb. Research has shown that lack of sleep can engender adverse effects on an individuals physical health, mental health, and productivity. The information presented in this paper will address the importance of sleep in human health, safe ty, and productivity. First, some physical issues attributed to sleep deprivation will be discussed. Next, mental problems linked to lack of sleep with be outlined with put down cases.Lastly, examples of errors and disasters that defecate been tied to sleep deprivation will be presented. There are many physical issues that are linked to sleep deprivation. Cardiovascular problems and greater guess of death leave been tied to lack of sleep. The human eubstance requires sleep to restore and repair itself. When the be does not get the rest it requires the consequences can be quite unfortunate. Poor sleep has been shown to increase the risk of high blood pressure, heart failure, stroke, and heart attack. The human liver produces a protein called C-reactive protein that is used by the carcass to aid in response to inflammation, injury, or infection and is removed by the body when the inflammation, injury, or infection is gone or heals. This protein binds to damaged cells, as good a s some bacteria, to aid in removing them from the body. This allows the body to heal. One study showed that over a period of five years during which a subject was denied sleep, the C-reactive protein builds up in blood at a steady and probatory rate. Sleeping allows the body time to process and remove these proteins. An increase of these proteins can at times lead to heart attack, stroke, or high blood pressure (Meier-Ewert , Ridker , Rifai, Regan, Price, Dinges Mullington, two hundred4). The body is adequate to(p) to restore itself and heal when given between six and eight hours of sleep in a 24-hour period. While a person sleeps the immune system is working to restore and revive the body. When the human body is not granted plentiful sleep, the immune system is not able to fully complete the task of taking care of and healing the body. Lack of sleep can also take a shit the number of T-cells to decline in the human body.T-cells aid in immunity and assist other cells in their subprograms. Lower T-cell levels mean that the body is less able to fight off infection, subdue inflammation, or heal an injury (Mann, 2010). When the body is unable to heal itself, there is greater risk of death. Sleep deprivation can also lead to an increase of stress, which has been linked to heart disease, obesity, depression, gastrointestinal issues, as well as mental heath issues. Allowing the body to rest and rejuvenate during sleep helps ensure that many physical issues associated with the lack of sleep can be avoided.Another way that lack of sleep increases the chance of early death is in traffic accidents. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gives a conservative estimate that 100,000 reported crashes per year are a result of a fatigued driver (Facts and stats 2012). Mental illness has also been linked to lack of sleep. Issues ranging from poor concentration, inability to focus, remembering loss, the appearance of psychosis, and diagnosed mental disorders h ave been attributed to sleep deprivation. In the past, researchers believed that poor sleep was caused by psychiatric problems. However, recent research is showing that a lack of sleep is usually the catalyst of mental disorders. When the human body needs to concentrate on or focus when it has not had enough sleep, it produces hormones adrenaline and cortisol in an attempt to engage and wake itself up. These hormones give the body a short-term boost in efficiency and they affect the body in much the same way that caffeine does. Once the boost in energy is finished, the body a great deal crashes and a person returns to feeling tired unable to concentrate or focus again. These hormones, again like caffeine, often make a person feel jittery of jumpy, which may impede concentration and focus. These hormones have also been directly linked to increase stress in the human body (Hart, 1985). Memory loss can also be a result of sleep deprivation. Memories are captured and recalled in the br ain by a three- feel process. The first tint in creating memories is acquisition where a person has their first experience with what will become the memory. The next is consolidation which occurs while a person sleeps. In this step a memory becomes stable in a persons brain.Recall, the final step, is the ability to access the memory in the future. When the brain is denied the opportunity to stabilize a memory during sleep, a person is much less likely to retain the memory (Chang, 2011). Studies have also shown that students who study regularly and get a good nighttime sleep before exams generally do better than students who cram the night before. The information that the student needs is better solidified in the brain and is construct for recall when the student needs to access the information (Sifferlin, Augu). Symptoms of psychosis have also been directly tied to sleep deprivation. In at least two documented cases, persons who went without sleep for extended periods of time show ed symptoms similar to psychosis. In 1964 Randy Gardner attempted to gain entry into the Guiness Book of Work Records by staying awake for eleven days (264 hours). Gardner suffered a gamut of symptoms. Days two through five found Gardner unable to concentrate, irritable, unwilling to cooperate with others, and hallucinating. During days six through nine Gardners talk to slowed, his irritability increase, and he began to have lapses in his memory. He often would begin sentences without finishing them and he had difficulty recalling the names of common objects. Paranoia began to set in on day ten. On day eleven, Gardners speech was slurred and without intonation. He seemed expressionless and had to be encouraged to talk or respond to someone talking to him (Ross, 1965). A similar story is told of Peter Tripp, a disk jockey from New York. In an effort to raise money for the March of Dimes, Tripp stayed awake for 200 hours. He showed many of the same symptoms that Gardner did. Tripps e xperience with sleep deprivation ended with him mistaking a doctor for an undertaker. He charged out of the manner with doctors following close behind. Tripps mind could no longer determine what was real and what was not (Ross, 1965). With the aid of doctors, Randy Gardner was able to recover completely from his psycho episode. He was monitored while he slept and eventually returned to normal sleep patterns and a normal state of mind. Peter Tripp, however, suffered from his self-inflicted psychotic break. For some time after his wary stunt he thought that he was an impostor of himself and complained of headaches and emotional instability.Lack of sleep can also affect how people perform at their jobs. enactment and remedial tasks are often affected by a lack of sleep. Simple errors, such as spelling, grammatical, mathematical, or clerical errors are most often made due to a lack of sleep. These errors can either go unnoticed or can be corrected without significant consequence. Mor e significant errors are also attributed to fatigue. Between 50,000 and 100,000 deaths each year are caused by preventable medical errors.Long shifts for doctors, interns, and nurses deny medical professionals sleep required for them to function a highlevels. The nuclear accident at Three Mile Island, the meltdown at Chernobyl, the grounding of the Exxon Valdez, and the explosion of space shuttle Challenger have all been linked to fatigue (Harris, Horne, 2000). Sleep deprivation is bad for your brain when you are trying to do high-level thinking tasks. It may have serious consequences two on performance and on the way your brain functions. -J. Christian Gillin, M. D. (DeNoon, 2000) In research and in experience it has been proven that lack of sleep can have adverse effects on an individuals physical health, mental health, and productivity. An individuals physical health is affected by sleep deprivation by an increased risk of death, cardiovascular problems, and issues with their im mune system. A persons mental health suffers as well from a lack of sleep. Memory loss, inability to concentrate or focus, and even psychotic episodes have been traced to sleep deprivation. Randy Gardner and Peter Tripp are prime examples of what happens to the brain when it goes without sleep. Poor job performance and errors ranging from insignificant to harmful have been linked to a lack of sleep. The amount of sleep needed for each individual is different.Where some people are able to function on very little sleep, others need many hours to fully restore and rejuvenate. References Coren, S. Group Motivation Inventory Essay Example for Free

Group Motivation Inventory EssayMajority of us humans read up from bed in the morning, set out for school or our job and practically do our daily routines in a way that is crotchety to us. We interact to our environment and the people around us without fully understanding why we atomic number 18 doing our routine why we go to school or do great in our job or atomic number 18 amused from a take leaveicular activity. Nonetheless we all know that there is something that motivates us for doing this. Motivation refers to the things both internal or external to a person from which makes him enthusiastic and persistent on pursuing a bad-tempered course of action (Daft, 526).Studying motivating makes us understand what makes us people initiate a certain action, and what influences our selection of actions. After I took the motivation rating exam, I have a moderate level of free radical motivation. This means that I am not fully committed to my assemblage but as well as not c ompletely ignore how my group will perform. After taking the exam, I realized that there are factors that affect a persons motivation on a group. Some of these factors are 1) composition of the group 2) commitment and dedication of early(a) members 3) chemistry within the group 4) appreciation of the group and 5) each members contribution for the groups success. Upon taking the exam, I became aware that the factor that mostly affects my motivation in a group is a members commitment and dedication to the group. This is maybe because I have the habit of giving my best on anything that I am doing. Having this attitude makes me compare what my contributions to the other members of my group. If I think that they are not as dedicated as me, my motivation becomes lower. Appreciation of the group is the next factor that affects my motivation. In my opinion, only a martyrise would work on a group that does not value what he is doing. When it comes to the composition of my group, the only problem is that some of the members of the group are so timid to even tell their names. I have encountered this kind of members. They usually want to work on their own. The only thing a leader should do is consecrate him/her what she will do and that is all. The composition of the group is essential to another factor, chemistry. The interaction within a group is also important when considering ones motivation. functional with group whose chemistry is good usually leads to achieving the groups goal. Contribution of other members to the group also affects my motivation. If all of the members participate well and contribute what they should get out makes me want to also do my part well. On the other hand, if some members do not actually help with the achievement of our groups goals, the other members, including myself, would have to exert more(prenominal) effort. Thus, we have to be more motivated. The motivation exam made me realize that I am moderately motivated when I am involved in a group. Unlike before, I think I can also measure the dedication of the other group members. With this, I am able to compare my level of motivation with the other members of the group. Only a little bit has really transferd. I still do my part wholeheartedly. I try to attend all of the scheduled group meetings and do my best to help the group finish its goals. The only thing that changed is on how I interact with them. Usually before taking the exam, I only ask something to the group if I am having trouble understanding what I should do.I do not want a conversation other than the problems that the group is dealing with. Now, I talk to my other co-members about anything under the sun to further correct our chemistry. With each members trust and friendliness, I became a lot motivated. After taking this exam and analyzing my results, there are some things that I would change in order to further improve my participation and motivation in other future groups. First, I will improve my interaction to my future co-members. The chemistry becomes the spark of a good group relationship. If group members interact to each other with respect and friendliness, everyone will help on each. Thus, group goals will be done in a smooth way. In the future, I will also motivate my co-members. I will talk to them if I think they are not participating well in the group and encourage them that we are a team and we have to work together to be successful. There are some theories or approaches to further improve motivation within an organization. One particular theory is the Expectancy Theory associated to the works of Victor Vroom with a number of contributions from other scholars. The Expectancy theory implies that the degree of motivation of a certain individual is associated on his expectations on their capability to perform a particular task and the desired awards he will receive. Expectancy theory focuses on the thinking process present to an individual to gain rewards, not on recognizing what his involve are (Daft, 536). With this theory, I think that sharing my expectations to my co-members will further improve each of our motivations, thus improving the performance of the group. The factor that mostly affects my motivations, based on the results, is the commitment of the other group members. If other members do not do their part, my motivation decreases. I am not comfortable working with a group who is not as committed as me. In order to avoid this, confrontation is needed. Other member should be confronted regarding their attitude and their respective responsibilities to the group. In a sense, before the group does anything, rules should be made clear. Content Theories can also be used to improve motivation within an organization. One of these Content theories is the notable Hierarchy of Needs theory by Abraham Maslow. The theory suggests that there are five classes of needs that motivate a person existing in a hierarchical form. Maslow argues that ne eds with low-ranks should be the priority. These needs (from lowest to highest rank) are as follows 1) Physiological needs the most basic physical needs of humans 2) caoutchouc needs the need for a protected and harmless physical and emotional setting 3) Belongingness needs the desire to be in a particular group with their trust 4) Esteem needs the need for appreciation and recognition within a group or organization 5) Self-actualization needs the need of self-fulfillment (Daft, 529-530).The adequate incentive for the group would be from the categories of belongingness and esteem needs. To improve motivation within the group, one should acknowledge each member for what he had done for the group. Appreciation should also be given to them even though their work is not that excellent. At least they have given their best. For every work that a member accomplishes, the other members should at least try to thank him/her. A simple line of good job will make a person exert more effor ts and be more motivated. Reference Daft, Richard. 2005. Management 5th Ed. New York MacMillan Publishing Company.

Michael Jordan vs Wikipedia Essay Example for Free

Michael Jordan vs Wikipedia EssayMichael Jordan VS Wikipedia Over the past twelve years there has been a vast controversy on whether or not the website Wikipedia is current enough to get sources that are accurate enough to intend. Many seem quick to judge whether or not if Wikipedia is a credible source and cites the necessary some to make it a reliable source to get information from. In the article Wikipedia(2013), unknown authors inform the general public about the Wikipedia website. The authors provide evidence on who updates their information, site their sources and include references. The purpose of Wikipedia is to persuade use uprs to use the website. Wikipedia targets the general public to use their website for a non-profit organization. Wikipedia is a reliable source because it cites its sources and gives sexual facts. On the website Wikipedia, under the source entry Wikipedia goes into detail about all the attributes and information about Wikipedia and how it came about and why it is a reliable site to get information from. Wikipedia has become the largest and most popular general reference work on the Internet.Wikipedia is a reliable source because of its vandalism program in which it is able to detect and remove vandalism within a few minutes. Also with Wikipedia being a ease online encyclopedia it allows for open structure, which lets the public write and change anything about any topic. On the Wikipedia website under the topic Wikipedia, found that a non-scientific report in the journal Nature in 2005 suggested that for some scientific articles Wikipedia came close to the level of accuracy of Encyclopedia Britannica(preface). With that being said, it justifies that Wikipedias reliability is just as effective as that of a profitable encyclopedia that is written by experts. Many feel as if Wikipedia isnt a reliable enough sources because it contains articles written based on authors interpretations of research that other have done. Schools sometimes do not allow their student to find research or facts on Wikipedia because they second-guess Wikipedias cr foreshortenability as a whole. Some questions that might come into play is, why wouldnt you cite the original source, and what relevance does someone elseinterpretation have? Even though anyone can edit Wikipedia, it is still reviewed and their vandalism program and bots that search for errors remove inaccurate information quickly. For the most part, you have extremely small chances of finding treacherous and inaccurate information on Wikipedia. Wikipedia to a fault gives blue text indicates links to other Wikipedia entries or to sources for the entry to help the reader go more into perspicaciousness about their topic. Encyclopedias are mainly written for people who do not know a great deal about a specific field and would like to find out more. With Wikipedia being that online non profitable encyclopedia it allows people to search any subject and conveys enough info rmation to a reader who knows undersize or nothing about the subject. Wikipedia also has through out the text blue highlighted text that can lead the reader to links to other Wikipedia entries or sources tha t relate to the subject of choice.Wikipedia has lead me to believe that it is a very reliable source because of its citing and credible facts I received about Michael Jordans career. Wikipedia lead me to new facts about Michael Jordans career such as, During the Bulls playoff run in 1993, controversy arose when Jordan was seen gambling in Atlantic City, New Jersey, the night before a game against the Knicks. In that same year, he admitted to having to click $57,000 in gambling losses(14).With Wikipedia bring up this problem about Michael Jordans life and citing where it came from and giving me alternate links that lead me more into perspicaciousness with this problem proves that Wikipedia is reliable. Some come to the conclusion that Wikipedia has a weakness and is not a reliable source because it is an open source website which means anyone can edit it. Its weakness is what makes it so great. Anyone can edit it. This brings a huge variety of information as well as great depth an d large bibliographies. Wikipedia also goes above and beyond to correct and edit sources have citations and staff are always checking edits. In Wikipedias disclaimer that may it apparent that Wikipedia may be inaccurate and misleading and it is ultimately they users decision and to use their judgment call. But how is some random website that is Googled up more reliable then Wikipedia? In my personalised experience Wikipedia has lead me to valuable and reliable information about the topic at hand and has gave me pictures, facts and sources to back my information up with. A Life Of Sacrifice History Essay

A Life Of Sacrifice History EssayNovember 13, 2010 wasnt a special day to many community. But to about fifty billion Burmese, it might be the turning point of their lives. On that day, a chick called Aung San Suu Kyi was released from detention. In front of her house, a crowd of her supporters gathered together to celebrate the release. The lady is the pro- body politic leader of Burma and has been detained for 15 of the past 21 grades, most of it under house arrest. Define Moral courage Thesis statement.Aung San Suu Kyi was the nevertheless daughter of Aung San, the man considered to be the founder of modern Burma. Unfortunately, Suu Kyi was only two years old when her father was assassinated in 1948. She hardly remembered anything about this great man. But even though I never really knew him, she said, I was perpetually told how much the Burmese people loved and revered him. (The Lady) Aung San Suu Kyi spent a lot of time larn about her fathers philosophy and commitment to the cause of independence. This desire to understand her fathers feelings eventually translated into the belief that she had to finish the job that her father had begun. When Aung San Suu Kyi was fifteen years old, her mother Khin Kyi was appoint Burmese ambassador to India. As a result, Suu Kyi moved to India to accompany her mother. Upon arriving in India, Suu Kyi spent one year in a strict convent school. The following year she attended Delhi University, where she learned about political science. During the first few years when Suu Kyi lived in India, she explored the lessons of passive resistance of Mahatma Ghandi and Jawaharlal Nehru. When Suu Kyi was accepted at St. Hughs College at Oxford, she left Delhi University. As an undergraduate at St. Hughs in Oxford, Suu Kyi was remembered as very demure and genuinely innocent, yet with a strong sense of belonging to the Burmese elite. (The Lady 48). twain years after Suu Kyi received her degree, she left for New York. When Suu Kyi arrived in New York to stay with Ma Than E, the older woman had just started bunking at united Nations headquarters. At Ma Than Es suggestion, Suu Kyi decided to resume her stu cash in ones chipss at a later date and instead apply for a job at the join Nations. In March 1988, Suu Kyi received a call from a close family friend in Burma, informing Suu Kyi that her mother had suffered a severe stroke. Almost immediately, Suu Kyi began packing. I had a premonition, Michael wrote in the introduction to a collection of essays about his wife, that our lives would change forever. (Burmas Iron Aunty) The next morning Suu Kyi was on a plane heading to Burma. When Aung San Suu Ki arrived in Rangoon to care for her mother, General Ne Wins military socialist presidential term had been in power for twenty-six years. During that time, Burma had gone from being one of the richest nations in southeastern Asia to one of the poorest, most isolated, and most corrupt countries in the world. Thousands of monks, students, and ordinary civilians took to the streets in protest against the presidency. For weeks, as Suu Kyi nursed her mother in the hospital, the violence intensified, with groups of young people marauding through the streets of Rangoon.(The lady 56) By June, the doctors announced that there was no hope that Suu Kyis mother would recover. Suu Kyi made the decision to take her mother home to University Avenue, where she could die pausefully in her own room.Aung San Suu Kyi has never claimed that when she came to Burma in 1988, it was to lead a pro-democracy movement. It wasnt as if the students were organized in definite political groups in 1988, Suu Kyi once explained. The democracy movement evolved out of general chaos that was everywhere in Burma. It was this climate of rebellion that caused many political groups to emerge, which eventually coalesced into a democracy movement. On August 8, 1988, a day known as the Four 8s, a nationwide strike was called and that in cluded students, civilians, lawyers, doctors, monks and civil servants. Crowds surged into the streets for a pro-democracy demonstration. Sein Lwin responded by ordering military to open fire. However, the demonstrations continued and the death toll mounted. As Suu Kyi nursed her dying mother, she was kept informed daily of the news and mourned those who lost their lives on the streets of Burmese cities. By then, rumors that Aung San Suu Kyi was in the country had already spread. Many people believed that the presence of General Aung Sans daughter in Burma meant that much than fifty years of repression, civil unrest, and violence would in conclusion end. All of a sudden, pictures of General Aung San became a prominent symbol of the pro-democracy movement. In response to the hundreds of thousands of people who continued to demonstrate throughout the countries, Aung San Suu Kyi wrote an open letter to the government proposing that a committee be formed for the sole purpose of leadin g the country toward multiparty elections. Within days, Suu Kyi became a public figure, speaking out for human-rights and liberal free-market scotch system. On August 26, surrounded by her supporters, she spoke to a crowd estimated at half a million people. Her message was simple nonviolence, human-rights, and democracy. For Burmese, Suu Kyi not only was a poignant reminder of the past, but a living symbol of hope for the future.(Body paragraphs continued, influence of Buddhism,In 1991, this once obscure Burmese woman, when she had been living in exile for more than two decades and had been under house arrest for three years, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. There was no rectify way for the pro-democracy movement in Burma to cook the world aware of the political repression throughout the country than for Aung San Suu Kyi and to have won the Nobel Peace Prize. Yet, there were many people, especially within Daw Suu Kyis inner circle, who feared that fetching the prize would make i t even more difficult for Daw Suu Kyi and the SLORC to come to any compromise. As the octetteh woman in history to win the peace prize, and the first to receive it while in captivity, Daw Suu Kyi became the focus of a variety of human-rights groups throughout the world, as well as the United pass ons Department of State under the Clinton administration-which suddenly put the pro-democracy movement in Burma high on its international agenda. (The lady)Prior to the summer protests, there had been growing unease in the cosmos regarding the economic distress of the country which has stagnant economic growth and is ranked among the 20 poorest countries in the world according to the United Nations.9 Many, including the United Nations have damn the economic problems on the leadership of the military junta and the proportion of national income spent on the armed forces. In late 2006, the cost of basic commodities began rise sharply in Burma with rice, eggs, and cooking oil increasing by 30-40%. According to the BBC, on 22 February 2007, a small group of individuals protested the current state of consumer prices in the country. While the protest was small and careful not to be seen as directed at the military junta, officials jailed nine of the protesters. The military junta detained eight people on Sunday, 22 April 2007 who took part in a rare demonstration in a Yangon suburb amid a growing military crackdown on protesters. A group of about ten protesters carrying placards and chanting slogans staged the protest Sunday morning in Yangons Thingangyun township, calling for lower prices and improved health, education and better utility services. The protest ended peacefully after about 70 minutes, but plainclothes police took away eight demonstrators as some 100 onlookers watched. On 15 August 2007 the government removed subsidies on displace causing a rapid and unannounced increase in prices.11 The government, which has a monopoly on fuel sales, raised prices from ab out $1.40 to $2.80 a gallon, and boosted the price of natural gas by about 500%.9 This increase in fuel prices led to an increase in food prices. Soon afterwards, protesters took to the streets to protest the current conditions. These peaceful protests of September 2007 in Burma were not brought to any significant conclusion. The protests were not brought by electric resistance groups, or international governments. However, the Burmese lay people, and the monks were frustrated with the economic and political situation of the country. When the time came activists monks successfully brought together the people of Burma to protest. These protests gave sight to many young people to consider first-hand the brutality of an authoritarian government, thus making them realize the sacrifices the people had to make while fighting for political changes in Burma. Furthermore, the junta agreed to talk to the opposition because they want a win-win situation for all. The catch being that the opp osition groups follow the rules of the government as of now. Despite all of the talks going on between groups, true democratic changes are still far from being obtained, making the political future of the country uncertain. On the evening of May 3, 2009, Yettaw swam a 2-kilometer (1.25-mile) standoffishness across Lake Inya in Rangoon to the house where Aung San Suu Kyi was held under house arrest by Myanmar authorities. He asked Suu Kyi if he could stay at the house for a few days. She refused, and her caretakers exist to turn him in to the authorities, but Suu Kyi agreed to let him stay on the ground floor after he began to complain about leg cramps. The Myanmar government requires all non-family overnight visitors to be registered and forbids overnight stays by foreigners. As a result of the 2009 visit, the authorities declared that Suu Kyi breached the conditions of her house arrest.25 She was charged under the countrys natural law Safeguarding the State from the Dangers of Sub versive Elements, which carried a three-to-five-year jail term.(legacies and influences)One of the most difficult challenges that Aung San Suu Kyi faces is not only to bring democracy to Burma, but to achieve that goal without putting the people at risk. (her nonviolence philosophy) It is a difficult task since the Burmese people have been shut off from the rest of the world for decades, and do not believe democracy and freedom to be their inalienable rights. As a result, Daw Suu Kyis role lies somewhere between that of a politician who leads the people toward democracy, and a spiritual figure who encourages people to take their initiatives in riding the country of an oppressive regime. For the majority of the Burmese people, the most important sacrifice that Aung San Suu Kyi made for them was not giving in to the SLORCs demands during the six years that the military kept her under house arrest. The SLORC insists that at any time during those years. The lady always had the choice of adept passage out of Burma in a car to the airport and a free one-way ticket back to England where she had been living for the last two decades. For Suu Kyi, that was always an unacceptable alternative. It is also her credit that she refused a sign of courage and stamina that she remained steadfast in her commitment to bring democracy to her country of birth. (The lady)Since 1988, when Aung San Suu Kyi first became visibly involved in the struggle for democracy, the people have become even devoted and loyal to her, more committed to the cause of freedom in Burma, and more dependent on her to bring their plight to the worlds attention. If that were not the case, the NLD would have never survived-and grown-despite all the obstacles the government has put in its way since 1988.(Conclusion)Courage means to work for what you believe with perseverance and to be strong and to have good will. Its not courageous to use ones physical strength and to shout loudly, said Suu Kyi. It is undenia ble that Aung San Suu Kyi show her moral courage. Her sense of responsibility helped Burmese achieve their final goal. Her own little step was a big step to democracy progress in BurmeseUnplayed Piano.

Internationalization: Japanese Manufacturing Company

Inter disciplineization Japanese Manufacturing CompanyThis report was written to reassessment the process of inter home(a)istization of one Japanese manufacturing phoner in Singapore. Impacts from financial crisis in year 2008 forced the group companies to exercise terms-cutting measures in their global operations, and fix is the only way to save costs and to maximize the utilization of topical anesthetic expertise and responsiveness to meet global competition. The re look on focuses on several front-end aspects of foreign HRM activities during the process of planetaryization. Literature review on the topics of strategic IHRM, staffing systems, ethnic differences and bear selections were studied and comp atomic number 18d with the current organization structure and its HR focussing burn downes and practices. Issues and problems arises from carry denominations were reviewed for rising development. Comprehensive evaluation activities and beas of improvement were recommend ed for the play along to leap forward.1. Strategic Human Resources perplexity in Inter subject ContextStrategy Human Resources Management (SHRM) is a process that allowed a company to bring its core resources together for strategic planning, for example core competency, core processes, pagan, structure and human resource to align with the company strategy to achieve its goal and objectives, see figure 1.In the context of international field where the firm operation involves in various countries and employing opposite national categories of workforces, the SHRM will look into broader perspective, for example in the atomic number 18a of six identified human resource activities in domestic context internationalization Dowling P.J 2008. Some of the superfluous international HRMs activities seeed by the HR de incompatibleiatement when Mastec progressed into internationalization ar given in Table 1. The terminology of employee category are such as, i) PCN- employees natural and live in parent (home) country (headquarter), ii) HCD- employees born and raised in the legions country (where the subsidiary operate, and iii) TCN- employees born in a country another(prenominal) than the host and parent country, were introduced into the company human resource system. The capital punishment of the strategic IHRM depends on the stage of the company at during the process of internationalization. Adler and Ghadars model (1990) based on Vernons life-cycle theory distinguishes three phases in the international product life-cycle H. Scullion, 2005. The first phase (high-tech) focuses on products, research and development that emphasizing on expert competency and billet of functional area. The second phase (growth and internationalization) concentrates on line of reasoning growth and market penetration in local and foreign country. The third phase (maturity) coiffe jam on the lower price and cost- get a line measures due to global competition. In the modern technolog y world, product life-cycle has been shortened to 35 years, which allowed Adler and Ghader to suggest a after part phase. The fourth phase emphasis that a firm must pursue differentiation and global integration in order to achieve cost-control measures. This is the main resolve for headquarter in Japan to reorganize the telephone line structure in Southeast Asia. The parent company has seen the maturity of the market in Southeast which triggered their finish to implement cost-control measures. However, detail examines at each of the subsidiary shown that in that respect are mixture of phases which the subsidiaries are experiencing. For example, Vietnam and India are in the first phase which focuses on products and developing technical competency.Human Resource ActivitiesInternational Human Resource ActivitiesHuman resource planningadministrative activities in foreign subsidiary, cross-border risks management, political risk, terrorism and welfareStaffingStaffing flack in subs idiaries in Vietnam, India, Thailand and Malaysia. Recruitment of HCNs for host-country operation, etc.Training and DevelopmentCross- heathenish makeing, dustup translation, pre-departure trainingPerformance managementEvaluation of transportation commitance, overseas assignment ROI evaluation and staffs evaluation for foreign subsidiaryCompensation and BenefitsTax equalization, overseas housing and posting allowances, return air ticket benefits, health-care, etc.Industrial family relationshipdifferent taxation law, compliances with host government policy, and compliances with general acceptable practice of doing business.Table 1The other set out to strategic IHRM implementation was contributed by the ii logic of Evans and Lorange which suggested product-market logic and social-culture logic Evans Lorange, 1989. Both raise a question how a firm operates in a different product markets and diverse social-culture environment, which efficaciously establish human resource policie s. Product-market logic implied that various phases of produce life-cycle need different focuses of manager which dictates the HR activities to concentrate on core competency, entrepreneurial skills and technical know-how. Social-culture logic suggested that for a firm to operate in various counties, employing people from difference social-culture backgrounds influences HR activities into providing training and education of ethnic difference. Focusing on load-bearing(a) open communication, an open-minded listening, discouraging silo and facilitating activities that required less sentence structure will get around verbiage and cultural different barriers H. Buknall, 2005. The argument accented the strategic of willingness to listen, letting the other party to clarify any doubt without making self assumption to achieve effective communication.Since Mastec had gained the status of regional headquarter in year 2009, the HR activities had started to look into above requirement, but the implementation process is still at a learning stages. This is the reason why only expatriate from Singapore was allocated to subsidiary operation in Vietnam, whereas Thailand and India still managed directly from Japan. The effectiveness of current organization structure to manage the subsidiary and how effective it cigarette perform its role as regional headquarter and maintaining the similar take aim of corporate government as before need to be evaluated.2. Staffing Approach and Human Resource penchantAs a firm progressing toward internationalization, management and control become more complex due to operation in geographical dispersion and multiculturalism. In supplement those factors, the international firm can adopts centralized or decentralized approach which ever fits the complexity of its environments. Majority of Taiwaneses MNC likes Foxconn and Acer Computer practicing centralized control system. Prahalad and Doz key centralized approach as global integration wi th strict control and conclusivenesss making from headquarter. Decentralized approach is more towards local responsive that gives some decision making autonomy to its subsidiary in order to best modify it product and services to meet local market demands Prahalad, 1987. Typical decentralized control company is a joint venture alliances. One of a reference company which operates very successfully below decentralized system is Johnson Johnson. The IHRM literature utilise four approaches to managing and staffing its subsidiary, called ethnocentric, polycentric, Ptolemaic and regiocentric Perlmutter, 1979. Through these four types of management orientations, companies can clearly change from one orientation to another, depending on the needs of the company Mujtaba, 2006. This statement was turn up by the decision of headquarter to change management system in Southeast from pure ethnocentric to regiocentric. Detail explanations of each type of the staffing approached are given as f ollows2.1) EthnocentricIs a staffing approach where subsidiaries are managed by staffs from PCN. In ethnocentric approach, PCNs are dispatched to fill in key position of a subsidiary in host-country. The mind set of management is what work at home, will work here Guergana K.S. Mujtaba, 2009. Some of the reasons to pursue ethnocentric management system are drop of qualified personal, competency or special technical association in HCNs. The need for centralized control, risk management, needs for parent-subsidiary to maintain good communication and coordination are another reasons to practice ethnocentric management. However, there are several limitations associated with ethnocentric system where HCNs has limited opportunity for career promotion and leads to high turnover. Adaptation of expatriates to host country takes much longer time and often leads to poor decision and cross-cultural conflict whitethorn occur Zeira, 1976. High operating cost to hold on expatriates expenses bei ng viewed as unjustified by HCNs. Typical example of ethnocentric approach company are Japanese firms such as Panasonic, Sony and Hitachi. In Mastec organization, the staffing approach for subsidiaries in Thailand, Vietnam and India adopted ethnocentric system due to lack of competency of HCNs and the needs for corporate communication. Most of the customers in India and Thailand are Japanese manufacturers, therefore an expatriate with Japanese language qualification to communicate with customers parent company in Japan is still vital.2.2) PolycentricIn polycentric staffing approach, multinational firms rely on the HCN to run the business operation and rarely PCN are transferred to foreign subsidiary. Each subsidiary is treated as an independent business entity with decision making autonomy. In some cases, PCN opinion that foreign markets are too difficult to understand and therefore a join venture alliance was formed. The benefits of polycentric are local subsidiary has more supp lement to run business operation and achieve fastest local response to market demand. Polycentric system allows continuity of management by HCNs in foreign subsidiary. spoken language barrier, cross-cultural alignation problems and high relocation cost to sustain expatriate expenses were eliminated. The disadvantage of polycentric is bridging gap between HCNs and PCNs at headquarter due to language barrier, conflicting of national loyalties and compliance to headquarter HRM policies. There are potential drop risks of subsidiary become federation, isolated from headquarter and not pursuing corporate business goals Dowling P.J 2008. In Mastecs organization, the establishment of subsidiaries in Indonesia and Malaysia was under joint venture alliance and operate under polycentric system. In order to maintain a reasonable level of control and to provide managerial and engine room support, virtual assignments system was implemented with frequent business trips to visit the subsidiary company by the respective manager.2.3) GeocentricThe management style in geocentric staffing system focuses on global operation to draw best talents and resources. Each subsidiary and headquarter are interdependent of each other to make unique donation based on their comparative advantages. An example of this company is Mercedes Benz, where the company sources raw materials around the world from the lowest-cost perspective and assembles their cars in Ger more where the best technology is located. The strengths of geocentric approach are multinational firms able to develop a pool of global executive for deployment throughout the global organization. It encourages career development and promotion of high-potential executive regardless of nationality. However, in the process of collecting wisdoms and deploying expertise globally, host government may intervenes recruitment using immigration control to encourage employment of HCNs. across-the-board international socializing between PCN , HCN and TCN to support geocentric staffing system needs centralized control which reduced independence of subsidiaries and the staffing decision is time consuming. High cost associated with cross-cultural training, relocation expenses and the need to have compensation package with international beat gives substantial financial burden to the firms.2.4) RegiocentricRegiocentric staffing approach focuses at a unique(predicate) geographic boundary, but used a pool of managers from the subsidiaries within the region. Several regional headquarter can be formed such as in Asia, atomic number 63 and Middle East which will report to headquarter in parent country. The regional headquarter gains decision making autonomy to operate their business. HCH will be able to interact with PCN posted in the regional headquarter. Parent company is able to maintain reasonable compliances to headquarter HR policy and manage risks control with PCN staffed in regional position Dowling P.J 2008. Howeve r, there is a potential of federation at regional rather than a country basis. Career prospect in addition limited to regional level and lack of opportunity for HCN or TCN to explore headquarter working experience. One should remember that the four management orientations are not mutually exclusive. Therefore, they can take wander all the time within same organization for its departments or product lines Guergana K.S. Mujtaba, 2009. The current organization structure of Mastec clearly demonstrating the application of various management styles within an organization.3. Managing ethnical DifferencesCulture can be defined as shared of beliefs, values of a group of person, ways of commending and living L. Laroche, 2007. It encompasses what we are taught to think and response to any given situation by the society in which we are raised. In multinational business context that operating globally, one has to be sensitive and understand the cultural ways of doing business. An example is, in Japanese culture, some of the decision making process is executed through informal near discussion to reach a consensus called nemawashi Jon Miller 2007. Greert Hofstede has defined culture as Culture is more often a source of conflict than of synergy. Cultural differences are a nuisance at best and often a disaster.Geert Hofstede Cultural Dimensions, 2009The statement implied that if we have an insight view of different people behaves in different cultures, we will tend to interact with the people in other countries more effectively to create successful business results. The Hofstedes five cultural dimensions of study can be applied to have broader views of national culture.Power Distance Most of the countries in Southeast Asia region exhibits large power distance. In such organization, most of the power centralized in the hands of few key staffs. Subordinates have high dependency on their bosses and are unlikely to approach and contradict with their bosses directly. laissez f aire Countries in Southeast Asia are a mixed of individualism and collectivism. Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam are more collectivism due to the people from birth onwards are interconnected into cohesive groups, high respect for royal family and family oriented. In Japanese culture, individual opinions almost do not exist and employees will act according to the engage of their group the group come before individual. American and Australia countries exhibit high individualism where people are more self-oriented.Masculinity Refer to the societies where gender roles are clearly distinct. In masculinity society male are supposed to be assertive, tough and material success oriented. Female are supposed to be more modest, tender, submissive and concerned with quality. In Asian society, especially Korean and Japanese company, the masculinity culture is stronger, where female staffs are expected to serve tea whenever there is an important visitor.Uncertainty Avoidance This can be define d as people tolerance toward indecision or ambiguity. It manoeuvre to what extend the cultural intricate a person to exhibit the feeling of uncomfortable and nervous in unstructured situations. Country of USA and UK exhibit low level of uncertainty avoidance whereas Japan and Singapore exhibit high level of uncertainty avoidance. An example, Japan tends to have strict laws and procedures to which their people adhered closely.Long-Term Orientation Long-term orientation versus short orientation. This fifth culture is said to deal with Virtue regardless of Truth. Values associated with long-term orientation are thrift and perseverance and values associated with short-term orientation are respect for tradition, fulfilling social obligations, and protecting ones face. Both the positively and the negatively rated values of this dimension are found in the teachings of Confucius, the most powerful Chinese philosopher who lived around 500 B.C. This dimension also applies to countries wit hout a Confucian heritage such as Brazil. Hofstede, 1994, Geert Hofstede Cultural Dimensions, 2009Beyond the economic and political-legal issues, a countrys cultural environment (communications, religion, values and ideologies, education, and social structure) also has an important implications when it comes to a companys decision about when and how to do business there Bohlander/Snell 2007. Asian society comprised of various cultures and conventional customs inherited from different countries. It is vital for a global manager or expatriate to fully aware of the respective culture before departing for international assignment. Some manager can adopt culturally appropriate behaviors, but that does not apply all the time in all cultural desktop Dowling P.J, 2008. Therefore, it is essential for HR to arrange and facilitates cultural training to equip expatriates with necessary skills to cope with the revolutionary environment in foreign country.4. Expatriates SelectionHiring and dep loyment people to effectively perform international assignment is a crucial decision because failure in expatriate assignment will cause huge financial loss, damaging a business, and distance a relations between subsidiary and parent company. One can concluded that an expatriate failure represents a selection error, intensify in some cases by poor expatriate management Eugene Nic, 2002. Recruitment and selection is a process of searching potential line of merchandise candidates and gathering training for the purpose of evaluating and deciding best people for a particular vacancy. The factors involved in expatriate selection can be assessed from individual and situation aspects. man-to-man factors are i) technical ability, ii) cross-culture suitability, and iii) family requirement, whereas situation factors are categorized as i) culture or country requirement, ii) language, iii) MNE requirement.Technical ability of an employee to perform the required tasks is the most important consideration, given most of the reason for international assignment is to fill up position. That means, special skills and competency or important roles will be assigned to the expatriate. In most of the developing country such as Vietnam and India, lack of HCNs staffs ability required parent company to dispatch expertise to do the jobs as intumesce as knowledge transfer. Giving that reason, an effective skill of expatriate is also important to translate technical or managerial skills to HCN.Cross-culture suitability or ability to adapt to foreign environment is crucial for an expatriate to operate independently in foreign environment. The desirable attributes shall include cultural empathy, adaptability, diplomacy, language ability, positive attitude, emotionally stability and maturity Caligiuri, 2000. An employee with high coping skill enabled him to survive and mix into local culture. Apart from culture ability, individuals personality, communication skills and attitude to fore igner are also important factors for expatriate to build up personal network in foreign country, hence contribute to successful of international assignment.Family requirement determines the ability of family members to adapt to the new foreign environment, particularly spouse. The responsibility of spouse to setup new home, plus the down side emotional feeling of leaving behind a career, friends and social support network may cause burden to an expatriate and affected the work performance. The major causes of expatriate failure are family adjustment cause premature departure, poor performances, lifestyle issues, work adjustment, business climate and repatriation issues, and other opportunities arise. By far, the biggest factor tends to be a spouses inability to adjust to his or her new surroundings Riki Takeuchi, 2002. Disruption to children education, the need to take care of aging parents and custody of children for a single parent may cause the selected candidate to reject the i nternational assignment. In order to avoid burden of trailing spouse, the manager assigned to India is without accompanying by his spouse and children.Country or cultural requirement may impose restriction to employ PCN or TCN. Multinational firm need to demonstrate that HCN is not available, or providing a training program to transfer knowledge to HCN before the host government will issue working get. An example is in UK, working permit for Japanese language translation is easy to retrieve compared engineering jobs. In some country, working permits only issued to expatriate where trailing spouse is not permitted to work, which may create adjustment problems. Or work permit only issues to male expatriate (eg. no work permit for woman expatriate in Middle East country).MNE staffing policy is another important decision to meet company objective, for example knowledge transfer, management development or organization development. The motivational of HCN, HCNs career progression and ke eping the lowest cost of business operation also need to be considered. However, for the reason of corporate control and the need for special skills, staffing of PCN cannot be avoided. Other situational factors are mode of operation, duration and type of assignment and amount of knowledge transfers will affect the staffing policy. The ability to speak local language linked to the capability to learn local culture. Differences in language are recognized as major barrier to effective cross-cultural communication. Even though, many multinational firms places language at less important criteria and they view language as a mechanical which is manageable by individual. Expatriates who are able to speak local language will be regarded as part of the local society which make business communication much easier and friendlier. The other important aspect of language is the ability to understand corporate language. Some multinational firm from non-English speaking countries may adopt corporate c ommunication using the language of parent country (eg. Japanese or Korean) as a standard way of reporting. Prospective candidate may be eliminated from the potential pool due to a lack of competency in the common language R.Marschanp, 1999. Therefore, language ability may limit the multinational firm ability to select the most appropriate candidate. The requirement of Japanese language to communicate with Japanese customers has primed(p) restriction of expatriate selection in India Thailand.5. Lessons LearnedThe decision of headquarter in Japan to change management system in Southeast Asia region has put great pressures on Mastecs HR management to looks beyond local context. Throughout the process of implementing IHRM activities, numerous valuable experiences have been learned for future improvement although there is no major problems arise. Those experiences suggested that IHRM does not only facilitate and supporting business units but plays a strategic roles to initiate the plan ning process and monitoring the implementation throughout the organization. The close coordination between HR department and individual business units in the implementation process is essential to realize the company objections. Several experiences gained are examined below for learning process5.1) Mis-match of expectation Lack of cultural understanding It is not surprise that the cultural training was ignored because HR department has interpreted for granted that Singapore is a multicultural country. The expectation manager from the HNC in term of responsiveness and local staffs management have causes conflict under macroscopical management system. This had resulted the manager to fly more often to the destination to resolve the issues.5.2) Lack of cultural understanding In India, holding hands between male-and-male indicate good relationship and trust of each other. However, this practice has given a culture shock to the Japanese expatriate when a local customer try to hold his hand during the walks for lunch after a serious business discussion.5.3) Insufficient expatriate arrangements The last minutes decision of selecting a candidate for job assignments in Vietnam has given surprises to the spouses. In order to keep his job performance, the expatriate agreed on the assignment and leave behind his ill parent to be taken care by his spouse alone. Frequently, the expatriate has to return to home at his own expenses for traveling cost.5.4) Lack of communication channel The above mentioned expatriate does not has communication channel to relay his personal problem to the company. Approaching directly to his boss could be misinterpreted into demanding for extra benefits. The issue may be solve if HR could approach open-minded discussion or using mentoring approach.5.5) Language barrier Due to the unique communication requirement with Japanese expatriate of customers and potential local candidate for jobs assignment in Thailand and India was eliminated. This h as slowed down company objective to reduce operating cost toward regiocentric management system.5.6) Lack of broader perspective Due to different compensation package for overseas assignment between Japanese and Singapore expatriate, a potential local candidate who has Japanese language ability spurned the offers for job assignment in India. The difference of compensation especially in hardship country has viewed as unjustified and less attractive by local staff.5.7) Lack of cultural understanding A newly expatriate Japanese manager exercises his authority to force a group of employee to work during the cultural national holiday in Thailand (Buddhist festival celebration). The manager has promised to his customer to dispatch his employees to support production and will pay triple salary for the over-time working hours. Without understanding the cultural practice of religious celebration in Thailand, he applied pure ethnocentric management style that worked well in Japan into Thaila nd society. That incident caused cultural conflict between that group or worker and the expatriate.6. ConclusionsThe internationalization process of Mastec is still at an early stage where there are still many activities needed to put in place to strengthen its operation. Mastec need to look beyond its coverage of IHRM studies in the area of training and development, performance management of expatriate, management of repatriates, succession plan, industrial relation, and human resources management in host-country. The issues and problems that arise could be avoided if the proper pre-departure trainings were conducted before expatriate assignment. People before Products is a philosophy of the miscarry of Panasonic Group company, Konosuke Matsushita (1984-1989), emphasize on cultivating the potential ability and development of workers before business Konosuke Matsushita, 2007. For example, Samsung Electronics used internal developed Local Expert program to train employees to better understand the international business environment Tony Michell, 2010.We can also predict that in long run there is possibility for parent company decision to move toward to polycentric system in Southeast Asia region subjected to successful of current arrangement. Therefore, it is crucial for Mastec to implement more IHRM activities in order to demonstrate its independency and capability to manage the regional business. At the same time, it is essential to gain respect and trust from headquarter by adopting strong corporate governance, cooperation and compliances to headquarter HR policies in Japan.7.
